CLS filed an amicus (“friend of the court”) brief in the Supreme Court of the United States urging the Court to take up the case of Doe v. Iowa, being litigated by our colleagues at Iowa Legal Aid. Doe v. Iowa is a case of great importance, as it challenges Iowa’s ability to prevent low-income people from getting expungements of their non-conviction records solely because they cannot afford to pay the fees they were charged in order to have public defenders. CLS has launched a new National Record Clearing Project in order to support legal aid and other organizations nationwide to either start or expand the reach of their record clearing programs, and we are proud to stand with our colleagues at Iowa Legal Aid as they fight for justice for low-income Iowans with criminal records.
