There are various city and state level programs designed to help homeowners who live in their homes afford their property taxes.
Every person who owns and occupies a home in Philadelphia qualifies for the Homestead Exemption, which reduces a homeowner’s assessed value by $80,000 for the purpose of calculating property taxes. There are no age or income restrictions for the Homestead Exemption.
The City also offers various other tax relief programs for low income, senior, and longtime homeowners. Homeowners can often qualify for these programs even if they have a “tangled title” and are not yet on the deed to their home. For assistance determining whether you qualify for tax relief, call the Save Your Home Philly Hotline at 215-223-HOME or visit saveyourhomephilly.org. The Hotline can connect you with a free housing counselor who can assist you with researching and applying for tax relief.
