The basic idea of any bankruptcy is to give a person buried in debt a ‘fresh start’ – that is, an organized way to pay some of his or her debts and wipe away (called “discharge”) the rest, giving that person a fair chance to start over.  

There are two main types of bankruptcies that generally apply to consumers:  Chapter 7 and Chapter 13

CLS provides advice about chapter 13 bankruptcy, and sometimes represents individuals in certain circumstances.  For more information about whether you are eligible to file a chapter 13 or whether it would be beneficial for you, feel free to come to CLS during our regularly scheduled intake hours at our North Philadelphia Law Center or visit the “Resources” links below.

CLS provides referrals for free Chapter 7 bankruptcies for income-eligible clients. Come to our office for advice and referrals.
