Statement in Support of the Rights of Individuals who are Transgender

Statement in Support of the Rights of Individuals who are Transgender

We are deeply troubled by reports that the current federal administration is considering narrowly defining gender as a biological, immutable condition determined at birth.  This would be a drastic move towards rolling back recognition and protections of transgender people under federal civil rights law.

If enacted, it could have profoundly harmful effects on our clients, on many fronts. As just one example, it could roll back protections for Medicaid and other health insurance programs that ensure that transgender patients can access appropriate medical care.

People who are transgender are already twice as likely to be living in poverty and many people who are transgender or gender non-conforming already face discrimination and difficulties accessing education, employment, housing, health care and the income supports and other safety nets that can help them overcome poverty.

We also know that just initiating this public conversation reinforces discrimination and provokes fear.

CLS stands in support and solidarity with our transgender clients, friends, colleagues, loved ones and the larger community.  We will be monitoring this issue and working to take action against this harmful proposed change.
