CLS Appoints Brenda Marrero as Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer

Community Legal Services (CLS) is proud to announce that Deputy Director of Operations Brenda Marrero has been appointed as CLS’s first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer. This is an important step towards institutionalizing CLS’s dedication to Diversity and Inclusion by ensuring that there is a high-level commitment to moving this work forward, both internally and externally.  In this role, Brenda will oversee CLS’s Diversity and Inclusion work in collaboration with the leaders of our Diversity and Inclusion subcommittees, CLS management, and staff.

CLS believes that a commitment to diversity and inclusion in our organization is essential to serving our clients effectively and addressing the injustices faced by people living in poverty.

CLS has engaged in a multi-year, organization-wide process to ensure that internal and external processes, practices and values reflect a culture of fairness, equity and inclusion. The Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer is a management-level position that leads this process and champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive environment within CLS.

In her capacity as Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Brenda will oversee the policies, trainings and initiatives that foster an open and inclusive work environment. In particular, Brenda will ensure the development of policies and programs to attract, retain and promote a diverse workforce for the organization at every staffing level. She will also establish and strengthen relationships with leaders, key stakeholders, and organizations that support CLS’s commitment to organizational equity and diversity; work with staff to address diversity and inclusion issues in our client services and in our advocacy work; and support and build an internal culture of learning, openness and transformation.

Says Brenda of her new role, “I am excited and humbled by this new title and role. CLS continues to make change in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.  I see it as a true privilege to work in this space in legal services.  I look forward to learning, growing and collaborating even more with my fellow CLS advocates and our public interest community at large to amplify this work.”
