Advocacy Leads to Medicaid Policy Change for People with Hepatitis C

Today, the Department of Human Services (DHS) is announcing changes to the state’s Medicaid (MA) policy to expand coverage of life-saving drugs to treat Hepatitis C (HCV) virus.

Community Legal Services represents several clients who were denied potentially curative treatment for their Hepatitis C diagnosis. We advocated for our clients and the many other Medicaid enrollees diagnosed with Hepatitis C to be able to access important treatment.

The Pennsylvania Department to Human Services should be applauded for their leadership in this area and their willingness to work with advocates to change this policy. We are thrilled that now our clients and many other Pennsylvanians will no longer have to wait until they are sicker to access this important treatment.

CLS partnered with the Pennsylvania Health Law Project, the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation of Harvard Law School, and Kairys Rudovsky, Messing & Feinberg to achieve this wonderful outcome.
