CLS Statement on the U.S. House of Representatives Vote to Cut Life-Saving Medicaid Benefits for Pennsylvania Families, Seniors, and People with Disabilities:

Today, the U.S. House of Representative voted on its bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The House passed the bill by a vote of 217 to 213.

Today’s vote puts people with pre-existing conditions like cancer or even asthma at risk of losing their access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance.

It is also devastating for Pennsylvania families who rely on Medicaid.  The House voted to roll back Pennsylvania’s Medicaid expansion, which covers more than 700,000 Pennsylvanians.  It also voted to cap Medicaid payments to states, limiting federal Medicaid funding for children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and pregnant women, and ultimately forcing states to cut services or limit enrollment.  And it voted to create new red tape to make it harder for families to get and keep the coverage they need.

Kristen Dama, a Supervising Attorney at Community Legal Services, said, “Today, the House voted to cut coverage for Pennsylvanians who need it most.  In addition to eviscerating pre-existing condition protections, the House voted to cut Medicaid funding that covers long-term care for seniors and individuals with severe disabilities.  It voted to cut early intervention services for children with autism and serious disabilities.”

Now, the bill moves to the Senate.  Community Legal Services calls on Senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey to stand up for Pennsylvania families by opposing devastating cuts to Medicaid and voting “no” on the bill to repeal and replace the ACA.
