Social Security / SSI

Social Security / SSI

We may be able to help with Social Security and SSI problems if you have been told you do not qualify for these benefits.

SSA provides many different kinds of benefits for senior citizens as well as for children and adults with disabilities.    SSA’s programs include: SSI (also called Supplemental Security Income), Social Security Disability benefits, and Social Security Retirement benefits.

To apply for any of these benefits, you must contact SSA.  CLS does not help with applications. You can go to your local Social Security office and apply in-person. You can also call toll-free 1-800-772-1313 to start an application. You can also apply for some benefits online at www.ssa.gov.

Unfortunately, many individuals who apply for benefits are wrongly denied. If you have been denied, you should appeal right away. CLS may be able to represent you if you have been wrongly denied for certain kinds of benefits.

We see many more people than we are able to help, so we are not able to take every case.

Important: Do not wait to file an appeal if your benefits have been denied or you have received a notice saying your benefits will be reduced or cut off. You should appeal right away – even before trying to get a lawyer.

We may be able to help if you are currently receiving SSI or SSDI and your benefits are being terminated or reduced for a reason not related to your disability.  For example, if you receive SSI and SSA says you have too many resources to continue to get benefits, we may be able to help with legal advice or representation.  We may also be able to help if you receive SSDI and your whole check was taken because of a past overpayment.  You should file an appeal right away at your local social security office if your benefits are being terminated or reduced.
