SSI / Social Security Benefits

SSI / Social Security Benefits

CLS represents people with disabilities who have legal problems obtaining or keeping Social Security Benefits.  There are several types of Social Security benefits, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which provide income to disabled individuals, including children.

For more information, please see the fact sheets at the bottom of this page.

What we can do:

Unfortunately, CLS does not help individuals apply for Social Security Benefits.  Please see our flyer How To Apply for Social Security Benefits for help applying.

Many individuals who apply for benefits are wrongfully denied.  If you have been denied you should appeal right away.  CLS may be able to represent you if you have been wrongfully denied certain kinds of benefits.

Important: Do not wait to file an appeal if your benefits have been denied or you have received a notice saying your benefits will be reduced or cut off.  You should appeal right away – even before trying to get a lawyer.  If your benefits have been denied or cut off and you have a hearing scheduled, we usually are unable to take the case if the hearing is scheduled in less than 60 days. Benefit Continuation:  If you appeal within ten days of the decision to cut off or change benefits, you can request to continue to receive your benefits while the Social Security Administration makes a decision in your case.
